The paper mill in Sweden dewaters sludge from a paper production using a belt press that operates 24/7 and processes DAF thickened biological sludge. The highly fibrous sludge causes frequent clogging, so preventive measures such as constant high-pressure showers and frequent maintenance are required.
This increases the costs associated with the operation and maintenance of the technology. The goal of the pilot test was to replace the two-phase process with a dewatering technology that will facilitate the operation and provide better results.
Several technologies had attempted to succeed here but only AMCON’s solution met the customer’s expectations. The VOLUTE DUO™ proved to be a perfect solution for highly fibrous sludge and easily replaced both the pre-thickening DAF and the belt press in one step. Dryness results were consistently 3 – 6 % higher than the belt press with the added benefit of > 99 % filtrate quality and negligible rinse water consumption.
