Petrochemical sludge treatment, France

Background

An industrial site in France collecting hazardous sludge from petrol tank washing and mixing with other hydrocarbon sludges sought to improve their sludge dewatering process. The sludge contained a high proportion of inorganic matter, sand, and fibrous residues, including wood and plastic fragments, making it extremely abrasive and difficult to homogenise. The site was separating liquids from solids by sedimentation in a sludge tank. AMCON recommended testing the VOLUTE DUO™ RVP-241 unit to verify its suitability and performance under these harsh conditions.

Installation details

The tested VOLUTE DUO™ RVP-241 achieved cake dryness of 58% DS, and while being the smallest in capacity of the entire range, extremely high throughput has been achieved for the size of the machine at 169.3 kg-DS/h. The capture rate exceeded 99%, and the machine experienced no cylinder blockage.  Thanks to AMCON’s recommendation, the client installed a tumbler screen and an agitator in the sludge tank to facilitate the dewatering process. A TS meter is also a crucial element for the installation of the VOLUTE DUO™ dewatering press to optimise polymer consumption when the sludge TS content varies so significantly.
