Konsekvenserna \u00e4r v\u00e4lk\u00e4nda f\u00f6r alla operat\u00f6rer av den generationens utrustning: stor spolvattenf\u00f6rbrukning, spraysystem, \u00f6verdimensionerade band f\u00f6r att n\u00e5 kapacitet, frekvent dukbyte \u2014 och n\u00e4stan total misslyckande p\u00e5 oljigt slam, som t\u00e4pper till en duk o\u00e5terkalleligt.   <\/p>\n<p>Eftersom AMCONs personal underh\u00f6ll denna utrustning dagligen, k\u00e4nde f\u00f6retaget dessa fell\u00e4gen p\u00e5 n\u00e4ra h\u00e5ll. 1982 byggde det sin f\u00f6rsta egen maskin \u2014 en kompakt filterduks-f\u00f6rtjockare. Ett cylindriskt filter monterades fr\u00e5n staplade ringar med smala gap, och varje g\u00e4nga p\u00e5 skruven bar tunna kamliknande reng\u00f6ringsblad som n\u00e5dde in i gapen och tryckte tillbaka intr\u00e4ngande fasta \u00e4mnen i skruvkanalen.   <\/p>\n<p>Maskinen fungerade, patenterades 1990 och kom ut p\u00e5 marknaden i april 1991 under namnet VOLUTE\u2122 \u2014 fr\u00e5n latinets voluta, en spiral. Best\u00e4llningarna v\u00e4xte. Det gjorde ocks\u00e5 en \u00e5terkommande f\u00e4ltrapport: bladen gick s\u00f6nder efter bara n\u00e5gra hundra timmars fullbelastning.  <\/p>\n<p>F\u00f6retagets egna patentans\u00f6kningar \u00e4r uppriktiga om orsaken. Bladen m\u00e5ste tillverkas tunna och med h\u00f6g precision f\u00f6r att komma in i varje ringgap korrekt; samma geometri koncentrerade skrapbelastningen p\u00e5 den svagaste delen. Varje blad m\u00e5ste ocks\u00e5 monteras p\u00e5 axeln med h\u00f6g noggrannhet, vilket drev upp kostnaden. Slitage, brott och frekvent bladbyte var inneboende i konceptet, inte ett tillverkningsfel.
